About the Visions of Hope and Beauty...in Pink Project

Carolyn Quan's desire to contribute to charity has resulted in her most elaborate work of art to date that features six women who are breast cancer survivors living on Maui and includes over seventy photographic images. The project, Visions of Hope and Beauty...in Pink™, began in October 2005 in honor of breast cancer awareness month when Carolyn began her search for survivors to model for her project. Each of the models were photographed separately over a period of 6 months and then the collage was created from the original photography. Carolyn photographs her subjects on location with only natural light using a 35mm camera. The photos are then digitized using a high-end flatbed scanner and using Adobe Photoshop as a tool, Carolyn creates her fine art photo collages. The digital artwork is then printed directly onto the canvas and photo paper with archival pigment inks.

The Project Mission

The project’s mission is to raise money through the sale of the art with 40% of the net profits going to charity, and also to allow non-profit organizations the use of the artwork for their own fundraising efforts allowing them to keep 100% of the profits generated from it. The free license to use the artwork for advertising, promotion and merchandising including t-shirts, posters, notecards, and mugs, will be donated to breast cancer and women’s health organizations throughout the world.

How It All Began

“Back when I was first starting out as a fine artist, I met a young woman named Barbara, under the Banyan tree when I was selling my art at the art fair there. She had just had a bilateral mastectomy (when both breasts are removed) and was on Maui for a ‘healing trip’. She saw my work and was very moved by it and asked if I had ever done anything with breast cancer patients. This planted a seed and from that point on, the thought floated around in my head for 3 years. The young woman’s inspiration combined with a strong personal desire to contribute my gifts to greater causes, including women’s health issues, grew into this project”.
